Improved SP-Studio front page & F.A.Q.

The last couple of weeks I have been working hard to improve the SP-Studio front page. Though I liked the plain look of it I noticed most visitors don’t use the menu to access the other parts of this website. They did not even read the news. That’s why I installed a new blog software (WordPress) and included the News in the front page. You can easily access them now by just scrolling down. The sidebar shows information about the SP-Studio community like current contests. And you can see random pictures from fans displayed there as well. Your feedback is what keeps me coming back for more updates, so I hope the new look will not only help you to stay up to date, but also encourages you to write more comments :).

But the News aren’t the only part of the website that has changed. Please have a look at this: THE NEW HELP / F.A.Q. PAGE

It is not only more comfortable to read now, but I also included more answers to your questions. For example there are tutorials about how you can combine two characters in one picture, improve the quality of the image files or use your own background. Please tell me if something is missing.

I guess that’s all for now. There are still some errors I have to fix and I need to transfer the comments for old blog entries, but I am glad it looks good so far and the new blog is working. Remember to update your RSS Feed because the URL has changed.

Forum updates

The SP-Studio forum & gallery were offline for 3 days because I had to fix some things. But this time was also used for two new additions:
The Off Topic area has new forums now. The big media forum was splitted into “TV, Movies & Literature” and “Computers, Videogames & Music”. And “The Arcade” is introduced for forum games. Those often lead to spam, so from now on your replies in this area will not be added to your post count. Please make sure to follow the rules of the games anyway to keep it fun for everybody :).
Another change was made to the forum index page. Now you can see the title of the recently active topic in every subforum. This way you have a better overview on what the members recently discussed.
Haven’t been a member of the forum yet? Register now! You can show your pictures, join contests and discuss whatever you want with other SP-Stduio fans. It’s for free, you just need to pick a nickname.

Anniversary Special: Making Of

SP-Studio Version 1In a month like this it’s the perfect time for a look behind the scenes. And that’s what this text is about – I hope some of you find it interesting and the others are not too bored because of it ;). I will answer question about how the SP-Studio is made. But let’s first have a look at what this website looked like 10 years ago. Do you remember this? It was before the age of YouTube, Facebook and World of Warcraft… a really long time ago. Click on the image on the right to play with the first SP-Studio:

blog_10years2aWhen I started to work on it I was still at school and had no experience with coding. I used Macromedia Flash to draw small animations for my South Park fanpage, but creating an interactive tool was something new for me. So I did it as simple as possible. I created a layer for every category (like in Photoshop or Gimp). When you click on a button the item was loaded into this layer. So it was not complicated in the beginning, I just had to learn a few things about Actionscript (that’s how you code in Flash). Here is a screenshot of what working on the SP-Studio looked like back then. You can see the timeline on top of the actual working area. This timeline contains the layers and every layer contains frames. When you jump from one category to anther a different frame shows up. I still use the same software, Flash. But the SP-Studio has become WAY more complex over the years.

The most important things about a character creator like the SP-Studio is the fact, that the items have to appear in the right order. In the SP-Studio every category of items has its own level (levels work like layers). The number of the level tells Flash if it is shown on top or under another item. Items within the same level replace each other. That is why it is more work to include objects for the “stuff” category – usually every “stuff” item needs its own level, because you should be able to include more than one of them. To keep track of which numbers I have already used and which item appears in front of the others I use a very long list ;).

blog_10years3aAnother important thing is that you take care of the position of the items. If a hat is only 1 pixel aside from where it should be it might not fit some of the hair-styles. A question I read a lot is: Do you draw everything yourself? Yes, I draw everything in Flash, using only my mouse. I added a picture I created some time ago about how I draw a hair-style. Nothing special, but you can see my favorites drawing tools. It is basicaly the same like drawing in Paint or Photoshop, but Flash is a software for vector graphics. Vector Graphics look cleaner than pixel graphics and by using them I can keep the loading time short for my visitors. It is a comfortable way to work because I can do everything with this single software: I draw, create buttons, code and publish in Flash. Some of my visitors asked me to do a HTML5 version of the SP-Studio, but even if I knew how to do this it would be way too much work. Right now I have no plans to give up on Flash.
This was my little insight look. See you in a couple of days with the big anniversary update!

10 YEARS SP-STUDIO!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Thanks to all my visitors who have supported this project over the last 10 years!
Wow… when I first got the idea for this website in the year 2001 I did not expect it to become so famous and a big part of my life for so long. The first version was released in May 2002 on my South Park fanpage planearium.de. Unfortunately I do not remember the exact date. So let’s celebrate the whole month! I plan to release some special updates.
ContestFirst: A CONTEST!
Submit a SP-Studio picture for the birthday contest until May 15th. The topic is very free, anything SP-Studio related counts. As always the winner gets a free wish for an item. Good luck!

NEW SP-Studio community! Gallery + Forum

After a whole week of work it’s done: The new SP-Studio.de community is finally online.
I hope you like it and many will join! 🙂
FORUM | GALLERY
There’s a new gallery, but it works like the old one: Everybody can comment pictures, but you have to register to upload pictures. The monthly contests will continue and you will be able to suggest new SP-Studio items in the wish voting area. If you score high in contests you might even earn your own user gallery. Have a look at the existing ones, there are some real artists.
But the most important change is the new forum which is connected to the gallery. Here you can ask for help if you have a question regarding SP-Studio. You can show your SP-Studio pictures in the “SP-Studio art” forums, no matter if you use the gallery as well. And you can just talk to other SP-Studio fans in the “Off Topic” forums.
For a long time I did not want to have a forum, because I do not have the time to watch after it. I am glad several community members decided to help me! The moderators (= green names) will always be there for you when I am not around.
Some things aren’t finished yet, especially in the gallery. For example I need to assign user groups for the old contest winners and upload the finished contests and wish voting pictures from the old gallery. But this will happen soon, thank you for your patience.
Enjoy the new forum and gallery!

SP-Studio community offline

The SP-Studio community is offline for a couple of days. Some big changes are made, but it will come back of course! Here you can see what I am working on right now. This is for the members who don’t know how to spend their time without the community ;). Everybody who is bored by this can just ignore the long text.
I will keep you up-to-date here, on Twitter, Google+ and Facebook.

SP-Studio and Google+ (and more)

I created a Google+ page for the SP-Studio. Click on the Logo if you want to take a look:
SP-Studio Google+ Page
You can support SP-Studio.de by sharing the link. And of course you will be informed about every new update there. I created albums with the best pictures from the community contests and with examples for every update I’ll make.
Google+ is rather new, so those of you who prefer Facebook can follow the SP-Studio there by clicking the Like button on the front page. 50.000 fans like the SP-Studio so far at Facebook, which is a great success, considering I never begged for it ;). Thanks a lot for your support!
If you don’t like Facebook and Google+ you can still follow SP_Studio at Twitter or subscribe to the RSS News Feed. So there are plenty of possibilities to stay up up date, give me feedback and support this project by sharing the news and pictures with your friends. But with all this new social media stuff I stopped sending E-Mail newsletters. Sorry, it was just too much work and not many people used them anymore. So please decide for another way if you want to be informed about my updates.

Big Community update

After 3 days of being busy I am finished with all the updates I wanted to include.
The SP-Studio community is back! No beta anymore :). Those are the main changes:

  • Sub-menu! Direct access to new comments / pictures, top rated wishes, your favs and the search.
  • Private Messages! Now members can write PMs. Just click on the “PN” button next to a nickname.
  • Who is online? On bottom of the main page there are statistics now. You can see who is online.
  • Favorites! This feature is now easier to use. Use the star button on top of a picture to “fav” it.
  • Report files! Use the “report” button next to a picture if something is wrong with it.
  • File replacement! Now we can replace pictures with updatet versions, comments & ratings stay.
  • Social Sharing! Pictures can be easily shared at Facebook and Twitter now.
  • BB-Code Buttons! They help you to add URLs, bold text or other things to your comments.
  • And more… The albums are sorted in a different way now, so the user galleries are on top. I cleaned up the wish voting area, deleted eome declined and not so intersting wishes. There are several small changes made to the design. When you click on an image now the name of the upload is shown too. You can look for uploads from certain dates now. I made new pictures for the wish voting area and wrote a help text about how the SP-Studio community works.

I made some minor changes to the main menu of this website too, because some people didn’t know what “home” and “F.A.Q.” mean.
Please refresh the main page of the Community! Otherwise it might not load correctly.

2 new items + 2 new languages

UpdateTime for a little update: Two new items were included today! Caribou, winner of the “What happened in 2010?” contest, requested the helmet. SoxKid, winner of the “Pokemon” contest, the haircut.
And finally two new languages were added for the instructions too: Russian and Spanish. I cannot offer a complete translation of the whole SP-Studio, but I hope this helps some of my visitors. Thanks a lot to my anonymous translators!
Work on the next bigger update is nearly finished… 🙂

Version 4.0! + SP-Studio Community

The new SP-Studio is there! The last updates were about new objects, this is not. I improved everything else instead, because I used the last months to think about what I want to change on this website. And there were many things… With version 4.0 it is easier for my visitors to save the pictures and for me it is easier to include new objects. So this is the base for more updates in the future which was really neccessary. After many weeks with not enaugh sleep it’s finally finished:

NEW DESIGN
The menu and news of this website stayed the same, but the rest should be less ugly now. At least that’s what I think ;). Have a look around. New is INFO, were you can read more about the last updates and the history of this website. The SP-Studio itself got a new design too, nothing stayed the same. It’s bigger now and you can scroll through the categories instead of clicking through single pages. The Help texts will be better. I guess you will notice the changes and hope you like them.

SP-STUDIO COMMUNITY
A big change is the new SP-Studio Community. What’s that? Well, I always thought it was sad that I had so many visitors (10.000s per day), but they could not interact. So now you can join the Community, which is a gallery for pictures created on this website.
I plan to allow little galleries for every user in the future, but I want to test it first. So now it’s still empty and the first event will be a contest which will start tomorrow. An extra news entry will be written then, but you can already register your nickname in the gallery and look around.

SAVE BUTTON
YES! I almost lost hope, but finally there is a working save button in the SP-Studio. Many SP-Studio visitors offered help with this, a BIG THANK YOU to all of you! Though I had help it took me weeks of hard work to include this “simple” feature.

NEW OBJECTS
There are just a few new objects, because it was so much work to redo the SP-Studio and website. I wanted to focus on everything else first. But you can color your shoes now, there are text bubbles and a few other objects. I saved the rest for later updates. And don’t worry – you won’t have to wait so long again for the next update, because version 4 helps me to include updates easier. This one was special because it is a new version, which a lot of work for me.

Known problems:
Unfortunately I had some problems with the English translation, so some parts of the SP-Studio file are still in German only. Of course this will be fixed as soon as possible!

But I am sure you know how to use it, right? 🙂 The first contest will start in a couple of hours when the translation is finished, that’s why the Community Gallery is still empty. Redesigning everything at the same time always is kinda tricky, so please excuse some minor errors and details which are not finished yet. But now I will really need some hours of sleep first… the update stole me some nights lately. Update: Now the English version should be complete. If you still notice errors, please tell me about it. Oh, and the News got a nicer design too, fitting to the rest of the website.
