What were your favourite games this year?

I plan to play more during my vacation until January, but for now my top list from around 40 played games looks like this:

    1. Pentiment (PC)
    2. Roguebook (Switch)
    3. Backpack Hero (PC)
    4. Project Zomboid (PC)
    5. Vampire Survivors (PC)
    6. A little to the Left (PC)

I still have to finish it, but think Pentiment might be very interesting for history buffs like Eggyslav , because it seems to care a lot about how to show us the medieval times. It's also about the early days of letterpress printing and plays with different font types. You have to solve a murder case in a convent, which reminded me of The name of the Rose. The artstyle is also beautiful and well fitting fot the subject. Just prepare to read a lot.

Roguebook is the first card based roguelike I really enjoyed since my Slay the Spire addiction. But the Switch version did not save my progress several times, so I would recommend to get the PC version instead.

Backpack Hero is still in Early Access, but I think the idea is very satisfying. You just manage your inventory while exploring a dungeon. The way you place the weapons, potions or armor let you fight better or improve in other ways. It's a mix between puzzle game and dungeon crawler, and I'm curious to see how this will look in the end, because there already is a lot of content.

  • This year I didn't really play video games.

But I did get deeply into the ttrpg of Call of Cthulhu which was a great fun. But my favorite game to play I think was: Saints Row 4 and Papers Please

  • This year I returned to my all time favourite series: The Elder Scrolls. To be specific, I returned to playing Morrowind (since it had it's 20th anniversary in May), and now Skyrim Anniversary Edition. I also enjoy Mount and Blade: Warband and it's mods, and Rimworld.

  • I've just realised I didn't play any games released this year, I just tackled a little bit of my backlog and got pretty hard into Metroidvanias.

Best game I played for the first time this year was Super Metroid. Obviously a classic but it's joined my pantheon of SNES games that are still 10/10 today, along with A Link to the Past and Kirby's Dream Course (it's the best golf game ever fight me)

Shout out to both Ori games as well, especially Will of the Wisps. Had a great week plowing through those two before Hollow Knight completely crushed my spirit.

Can you tell what are these games about?

Aprt from the ones I already mentioned:

Project Zomboid is a survival game that has been in development for a long time and has a lot of interesting content to offer. You explore the abandoned neighbourhood, avoid or fight zombies (depending on your weapons), loot and build a base. It's a lot of fun in multiplayer and produces your own funyn st ories. Since I get motion sick from first peron games I enjoyed this one a lot because usually this genre is typical for first person games. It was very popular on Steam early this year.

Vampire Survivors was another very successful indie game from earlier this year. It spawned a lot of copies but the original is still the best. You avoid the constantly spawing hords of enemies and collect power ups. Quick, brainless fun.

A little to the Left is a very relaxing, cute puzzle game with a nice variety. You "just" sort stuff, but have to come up with the rules. Not too difficult, but I like it.

Jareen2: I played Papers Please some years ago and liked it very much! Do you know Return of the Obra Dinn from the same dev?

  • My best friend introduced me to the Fallout world...so I started with Fallout 4 late last year, finished that over the summer...and now I'm currently playing Fallout: New Vegas.
And of course when my anxiety acts up I play Animal Crossing lol.

Nice, I also recently started playing Fallout 4! Question for you Bella, who did you go with? The Brotherhood, Minutemen, Railroad, or Institute?

I initially started out with the Minutemen...but then I went with the Railroad! :)
My main companion was Codsworth, I absolutely adore him <3

Recently I played another indie game which was released in 2022: "The Case of the Golden Idol". It became my favorite game of the year! Highly recommend it!

It's a detective game set in the 18th century that looks like a classic point-and-click-adventure, but it focuses entirely on the murder sences. No running around and talking to people. You explore the scene and make conclusion about what happened. I love this concept. And it has mystical elements which I like as well. If you know Return of the Obra Dinn the game mechanics feel similar. But this one is a little bit easier.

  • my favorite game is yandere simulator! here is what its about!

it takes place in a school called akademi high, and the main protagonist ayano aishi, a japanese schoolgirl who is obsessed with a boy named taro yamada. there are 10 weeks in the game and there are 10 rivals you must eliminate for your “senpai” to like you and no one else. if you fail to complete the challenge, you will not have your senpai and you will not have your “happily ever after”

playable on: microsoft windows, android (not sure about android)

THE GAME CONTAINS GORE AND PROFANITY, IF YOU DONT LIKE THAT/IF IT TRIGGERS YOU I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT

  • One of my favorite PC games is "Inscryption" (yes, it's spelled like that), it's an amazingly creative game that mixes escape rooms and psychological horror together and comes out with a masterpiece. The storyline is that you are a vlogger named Luke (also known as "The Lucky Carder") filming yourself opening packs of an out-of-print card game called Inscryption. One card has coordinates written on it, and you find a box there with a floppy disc titled, again, Inscryption. After preparing your computer to run it, you find you cannot start a "New Game" and are forced to start from the "Continue Game" state. In the game, you find a shadowy man, named Leshy, in a cabin and you are forced to play a dangerous game of DnD (dungeons and dragons) with him.

It's a great game of risk and battle, and I really like it. :)
