Favorite games of 2016

  • We have the movie thread, so let's talk about games as well. :)

I was more interested in indie games than the big AAA stuff, so my top list might look a little bit strange:

    My top 3:

Pokémon Go might not offer the deepest gameplay, but it was an amazing experience. People played it a lot in the park in front of our house and so it felt like a social experiment to me. Old people, young people, casual and experienced gamers helped each other catch some rare Pokémon. I liked this a lot and still hatch my eggs when I go for a walk with the dog. It's the first mobile game I really got addicted to.

Stardew Valley is a cute and time consuming game in the style of Harvest Moon. I am sure most of you heard about it because it was very popular on Steam. I never liked Harvest Moon but I played a ton of Stardew Valley. So much fun, because you don't just manage a farm, there are many RPG elements as well.

Curious Expedition might be especially worth a look for Eggyslav, because it's about history ;) . But I think everybody can enjoy this little gem. It's from a German indie developer and combines roguelike challenge (it's really hard in the beginning) with addicting stragtegy. You plan an expedition, collect treasures and try to survive.

Tabletop Simulator is a honorable mention, because it was not released in 2016. But I got it this year and use it a lot to play board games with friends who don't live next door. The Doom boardgame, Agricola, Illuminati,... It's an incredibly powerfull tool! We even started Dungeons & Dragons.

Which games did you enjoy most in 2016?

  • I have to agree on Stardew Valley, It's so charming, and packed with features, and all made by one single guy. I also watched Game Grumps gameplay of "Inside", And it was amazing.
As of curious expedition, I might get a look at it. :)

  • I don't really have a top 5 or something but I do have my favourite one.

    Planet Coaster.

The in my eyes next true rollercoaster tycoon game is pretty fun. You are very free in what to build and how. With a lot of separate pieces and different positions is it very wide. I also love the cartoony graphics. (And love the weather reflection)

  • I am thinking about giving this a try, but I am not sure about the direction it takes... I loved Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 and played it a lot, but I am more interested in park managemant than in building cool rollercoasters. Is the mangement in Planet Coaster as good as the rollercoaster building? Are the scenarios a nice challenge? Is there a campaign?

Well you got 3 kinds of gamemodes.
Campaing mode (the usual parks with challenges to complete. Going from bronze stars (easy) to gold stars (hard).
Sandbox mode (no money and everything is unlocked)
Challenge mode. (Just like sandbox mode you will start with a non pre made park. But this time you have money and will get challenges to do to unlock 1000 dollar, like build a 600 feet long coaster.

These are possible in the just like sandbox mode in the 5/6 biomes. They do come with diffeculties settings. Easy, medium, hard, harder. I haven't really done anything else then Easy but I have seen gameplay of Harder mode. In harder mode rides brake down quickly, you start only with 5000 dollar with 2 rides and some food to build. (most expensive ride is 4750 dollar).

For the management. You can research stuff and depending on how much you pay, the faster it goes. Also you need to pay the staff you hire. You can train them and lower/raise their payment. If they are not happy they will show it in their thoughts and if they got enough of it they will quit. This causes mechanics, janitors and entertainers to just walk out of your park and stalls to close.

Of course can you also fire staff, causing with the entertainers/mechanics and janitors to show a sad person walk out of the park.

But I guess the best thing is to watch this video of Planet Coaster themselves or just watch gameplay to decide if it fits your style
