Space Tales

For a while I've been thinking about creating my own comic. I think I used to show some early concept art in another thread. One problem I always face ist that my fantasy works very visually. So I always need some visual inspiration to get started. In addition to that, the interation between text and images often necessitates me to rework images I've already drawn.

Now the idea came to me to use SP-Studio as a visualization tool. So I would be able to quickly get an impression what to draw and where to leave spaces for the speech bubbles. Often I will have to heavily modify the SP-Studio drawings and add stuff but that's still quicker than drawing everything myself over and over again.

The next page is based on a concept art I once drew, so I could reuse the characters.

The idea came to me to experiment with visualizing the passage of time. I'm not completely sure how well that went.

The relatively small bodies of the SP-Studio characters clashed a bit with my more realistic approach on the next page so I substituted them with rough sketches. Also, the big heads make scenes with multiple characters a bit crowded. So I used already existing own characters as stand-ins there.

As English isn't my native language I sometimes struggle a bit with the dialogues. Maybe some native speakers could give me some feedback on how natural they sound.

I got an idea for an alien species for my stories. They should look a bit like birds but also be plants and they definitely should be cute. These are the inspirations I found on SP-Studio:

And this is my first take on the species. I think they could be called something like chirpcharps.

In contrast to the SP-Studio style, my characters always have an outline. So for the chirpcharp to fit in, I added one. Also, as chirpcharps are part plants, they need strong claws to sit in the tops of the trees and take a sunbath. Then I thought antennae would make them look even more alien.

I think slit pupils even fit better.

I wonder if there's already a children's book about alien birds ...

Today, I tried to make the chirpcharp overall look more feathery.

Chirpcharps normally come in groups. But it's very hard to tell them apart.

As I'm often using SP-Studio as an inspiration for my own art, it's actually the very goal to gradually overcome the South Park style. In this picture for example only the design of the twig is left from Janina's illustrations.

But maybe this thread really isn't in the right subforum. What du you think Janina ?

I'm currently working on the looks of a new character. This is a draft of Captain Tanada.

To get a quick idea how a certain concept might look like, I often create a collage of objects that already exist or that I can easily modify. Technically, even my complete pictures are collages, only more elaborate ones.

In any case, this is a first visualisation of what Captain Tanada might look like sitting in his office when he is not needed on the bridge.

But keep in mind this is still work in progress.
