The amazing new LOCK function

The new SP-Studio comes with a poweful feature that has not been a part of the old version. It’s worth exploring, because I know you will love it: The new LOCK button!

This button in the item menu lets you lock / unlock any item. While usually items in one category automatically replace each other a locked item is not replaced anymore. If you select something else from the same category it will be placed in addition to the first item. If they share the same space on the stage they will stack on top of each other. Here are some examples of the possibilities this new function offers:

  • You can wear any shirt on top of any other shirt to create your own fashion. In the old SP-Studio this was only possible within the “freestyle collection” for three layers, but now it works for every item.
  • You can combine different earrings or necklaces.
  • You can select more than one foreground effect to create rainy weather with a snow storm on top.
  • How about combining different hair-styles to add a pony tail to your braids?
  • You can even build multiple characters in one picture by adding different bodies, eyes and mouths.

For me this is a dream come true because it offers so many new possibilities to be creative with the SP-Studio. :)

Launch day: December 21st!

Important announcement: This is the release date of the new SP-Studio!

DECEMBER 21st 2020

During today’s Twitch livestream I also showed a preview version (work in progress) of the desktop layout with its optimized user interface. On big screens the new SP-Studio will use the available space better to let you see more thumbnails without scrolling. The stage will be bigger as well, making it easier to edit your picture. The main category icons are always in view in the top menu bar and a second bar with tabs opens for the subcategories. Of course everything runs directly in your browser, like the mobile version. Lars does a great job in optimzing the design for different screen sizes, and I am looking forward to sharing the final version with all of you.

SP-Studio Twitch live streamTwo months ago I revealed the mobile version of the new SP-Studio in a special livestream. Now it’s time for the promised second part of the reveal! This time we will have a look at the big version, show new awesome features Lars coded and I will tell you about the actual release date. Of course I will also reply to questions and feedback from the chat, so I’d be very happy to see some new and old faces! :) You need to register on Twitch to use the chat. This is the time and place:

More freedom with colors

sp-studio.deI already promised more freedom when it comes to recoloring existing items, and now I want to show you a little preview of what this actually means. :)

These are some of the t-shirts which only had one standard color scheme in the old SP-Studio. In the new SP-Studio they will have up to two custom colors which you can combine in any way you want. I feel like this is a huge step forward to more creative freedom when it comes to shaping your own characters. It’s a lot ot fun to play with the colors and your characters will look more unique because of these options.

New SP-Studio: Transparency

In about two months the new SP-Studio is supposed to launch! So I set up an extra page to collect all information about it in one place:

THE NEW SP-STUDIO

In addition I can announce one new feature I haven’t talked about yet:
You will be able to save your image as a png file with transparency! Lars made this possible in the new SP-Studio. You can remove the background and only save the character. Then you can paste it onto your own backgrounds or easily combine multiple characters in a programm like Paint ot Photoshop. The transparency even works partly which means items like fog clouds or glasses will keep their look. Transparent png files where wished by many SP-Studio fans over the years, so I am very happy about this new feature.

New SP-Studio: item options

SP-Studio emoji updateWhile we are working on the new SP-Studio I want to show you another preview of the current state of development. Let’s have a look at the new item menu, because I did not show it in the last blog post. Back then it was not finished yet, but Lars worked a lot on it lately and had some great ideas on how to improve it. You can click on the image to zoom in.

As you can see every item will have a name now (English / German). It appears in the upper right corner of the item options. I hope this will come in handy for users with bad eye sight who use screen readers – or if you are just confused about what I wanted to draw. ;)

Then of course there are the buttons with different item options. Continue reading

New SP-Studio: mobile version

Today I want to show you the new (and very likely final ;)) design of the new SP-Studio’s mobile version. I already showed this to my Patreon supporters and in my Twitch livestream last weekend, but now it’s finally time to share some screenshots in this blog as well. So let’s have a look at what Lars developed for us, because I can’t wait to show this to all you!

Please remember: This is work in progress. I like the design very much and many functions are already implemented, but there is still room for changes until launch. For example a new font is very likely to be used. But everything you see in these screenshots is actually running.

First look: new SP-Studio mobile app

SP-Studio Twitch live streamThe development of the new SP-Studio made huge steps forward during the last two weeks. Lars started with coding the mobile version, the design changed a lot and it looks so good already that I cannot wait to show it to you. So let’s do this!

I hope many of you will join the chat to dicuss the new design and functions.

And yes, there will actually be a mobile app for the new SP-Studio! This Progressive Web App will not need an app store – you can just put it on your home screen. The plan is to make it work offline, but it will also download the latest updates automatically. I’m super excited about this and I hope you’ll like it as well. See you this Saturday!

News about the new SP-Studio!

It has been a while since my last detailed update about the SP-Studio remake (or just “new SP-Studio”) development. The reason for this was that the situation became rough during the last couple of months and I wanted to wait until I knew for sure how the future looks like. Now I finally feel optimistic enough to tell you more about the current state of development and plans for the upcoming months:

A look back – and next steps

Happy new year! I hope 2019 started great for you and will bring you a lot of joy.

In this blog post I want to tell you about my plans for this year and look back on the last one. 2018 has been very exciting! Back in January I announced my plans to replace the old SP-Studio with a “remake” that won’t rely on the dying Adobe Flash plugin anymore. To make this possible I had to ask for financial support. This step was neccessary to safe the future of this website and I am incredibly thankful for everybody who decided to donate. My minimum goal was reached and I even found help with the coding. During the following months Kai Wegner helped me to build the base of the new SP-Studio and I worked on the design, learned how to deal with the new coding and started to convert and improve the old items.

SP-Studio Remake: Preparations

The SP-Studio remake is making progress, but unfortunately there is nothing new to show you yet. I mainly do things in the background which are very time consuming but boring to look at. So I thought about what I could show you in a blog post… and came up with this “little” text about how to convert an old SP-Studio item into a new one. Perhaps some of you are interested in “behind the scene” stuff like this.

I apologize in advance for boring you. :)

For every SP-Studio item I follow these steps…

SP-Studio remake: First look!

SP-Studio remake betaTime to talk about the current state of the NEW SP-Studio! I did not do this earlier because I wanted to wait until the important parts actually work. I already noticed a decline in donations, because of course you want to SEE that I am working on something. So I am very happy to tell you: We have a beta version!

Before I go into more detail I want to thank Kai Wegner who is helping me with the development. Luckily for me he is an absolute pro when it comes to the things the SP-Studio needs, like doing magic with svg files. Kai is coding the base for the SP-Studio remake in Angular2 and helps me to understand as much as possible for being able to edit it by myself. Since I am no actual coder there was no way for me to manage this without help, because building it in Flash was completely different.

F.A.Q. about the new SP-Studio

SP-Studio Patreon campaignIt has been one month since I told you about the bad sitution of my website and it’s time for another update. I received many questions, so this will be a F.A.Q. post about the future of the SP-Studio. Feel free to ask anything else in the comments!

1) In short: What’s the problem?

The SP-Studio is coded in Flash. But Flash is slowly dying, so the SP-Studio will not work anymore on your computer. To save it a new version is needed which does not rely on Flash. Though I can use my old drawings the whole coding needs to be redone in a way that’s save for the future. This project will be time consuming and expensive. In January I wrote this blog post to ask for your financial support to save the SP-Studio. Since I don’t charge you for anything this is the only way to pay for this. Donations are possible via PayPal or Patreon. Continue reading

Update on SP-Studio’s future

The minimum goal has been reached!

The mimimum goal of 600$ is reached!

Because of the amazing support during the past couple of days I reached my minimum goal, which means I don’t have to shut down this website! This is an incredible relief for me. Thank you so much for your funding (48 people donated so far) and for spreading the word! Every single one of you made a difference and helped SP-Studio.de to survive. I was even contacted by coders with experience in projects like this. So the future looks way brighter now than when I started this campaign two weeks ago.

As displayed in the chart above reaching this “mimimum goal” means there will be a new SP-Studio, which will use HTML5 / JavaScript / SVG instead of Flash. With those 600 $ I can create a working version this year. But since this was only the minimum budget it would lack some of the current features. So while it’s not about life and death anymore donations still are important. With them I can work on the more complicated features, like the little buttons to rotate und move items, or the export function. Continue reading

Help SP-Studio.de to survive!

SP-Studio Patreon campaignHappy new year! First of all I want to thank my supporters very much for their PayPal and Patreon donations! You helped me in 2017 to continue with SP-Studio updates and provide the visitors of the site with new items to build their characters. 2018 will be something special though, because huge changes are unavoidable… And I have some sad news.

The death of Flash means the death of sp-studio.de.

Flash is dying. We all knew this day would come, but now we have a date. Adobe will stop supporting Flash in 2020 and Google, Microsoft, Apple and other major companies have already started to abandon it. Since the SP-Studio is coded in Flash it already works on less and less platforms, and soon it won’t work anymore on your computer as well. If I don’t change from Flash to HTML5 / JavaScript this website cannot survive the next two years. Continue reading
